INITIAL RESPONSE

Emergencies requiring an unplanned evacuation may include visible smoke or a fire, an explosion, or sudden and significant structural damage to the hospital (e.g. from a tornado) When an unplanned evacuation becomes necessary:

  • The Unit Director or their designee has the authority to activate an unplanned evacuation
  • Alert others in the area of need to relocate or evacuate
  • Do not use the elevator unless otherwise directed by the Chicago Fire Department
  • When safe to do so, rescue individuals away from any immediate incident areas
  • In the event of visible smoke or a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm pull station
  • Notify Security Services by pressing the red EMERG button or dialing 7-7777
  • Notify Security Services by pressing the red EMERG button or dialing (312) 227-7777
  • Notify the Administrative Coordinator by dialing 7-4112
  • Notify the Administrative Coordinator by dialing (312) 227-4112
  • Evacuate horizontally beyond corridor fire doors to a safe location further away on the same floor
  • If necessary, use a smoke-free stairwell to vertically evacuate to a safe location two floors down from your current location and wait for instructions from the Chicago Fire Department

 

SECONDARY RESPONSE

& FOLLOW UP

  • Keep staff, patients, and visitors together at the safe location
  • Listen for overhead announcements and instructions from the Chicago Fire Department
