INITIAL RESPONSE

If you experience any physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse occurring in the workplace: Non-emergency situations:

  • Remove yourself from the situation
  • Immediately contact your manager and security
  • Emergency situation:

    • Get yourself and others to safety
    • Call 911 and call Security (312) 227-7777
    • Call 911 and call Security (312) 227-7777
    • Provide as much information as possible- location, number/ description of situation and/or assailant(s)
    • Remain calm
    • Protect/defend yourself from personal injury
    • Warn others and move to an area of refuge as needed

     

    SECONDARY RESPONSE

    & FOLLOW UP

      Give the person the physical space he/she needs

      Do not isolate yourself with an individual you believe may be dangerous

      • Maintain a safe distance, do not turn your back
      • If in a room leave the door open or open a closed door if possible
      • Try to sit near the door
      • Signal for assistance if able, the individual may be antagonized if you call for assistance
      • Do not mention discipline or the police if you fear an angry or violent response
      • If the situation escalates find a way to excuse yourself, leave the room and get help
