INITIAL RESPONSE

When a patient/family member with suspected/confirmed TB, measles, pertussis, or other highly contagious communicable disease presents:

  • Provide patient/family member with a surgical/procedural mask
  • Instruct the patient/family to wear the mask to cover their mouth and nose for the duration of the visit
  • Alert physician/ clinical staff in the area
  • Escort patient/family to a separate room

 

SECONDARY RESPONSE

& FOLLOW UP

  • Notify Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C)
  • Instruct patient on hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette (as developmentally appropriate)
  • Coordinate exposure work-up with Employee Health Services
