INITIAL RESPONSE

When injured due to a contaminated sharp object, exposure to a mucous membrane splash of blood or other body fluids containing blood:

  • Stop current activity
  • Wash injured areas well with water and soap
  • If mucus membrane is involved flush with water
  • If splashed to eyes then flush with water at eye wash station
  • Report injury to the Manager
  • Manager facilitates obtaining blood specimens from source patient.
  • Use courier to send patient blood samples and request “Super Stat” (refer to Blood and Body Fluid Policy for phone number and account number)
  • Call Lurie main Lurie Pathology Laboratory Specimen Processing to notify that rapid HIV is being sent

 

SECONDARY RESPONSE

& FOLLOW UP

  • One hour after source patient blood is sent to Lab, report to Corporate Health or call (312) 926-8282
  • One hour after source patient blood is sent to the Lurie Laboratory, report to Corporate Health or call (312) 926-8282
  • The operator will forward your call to the provider on call after normal business hours.
  • Corporate Health or the provider will give you instructions on care and follow-up required
  • Complete Employee Blood and Body Fluid Exposure Report and fax to 312-926-1787)
  • Complete Safety Event Report
  • Follow-up with your manager
