INITIAL RESPONSE
When injured due to a contaminated sharp object, exposure to a mucous membrane splash of blood or other body fluids containing blood:
- Stop current activity
- Wash injured areas well with water and soap
- If mucus membrane is involved flush with water
- If splashed to eyes then flush with water at eye wash station
- Report injury to the Manager
- The Manager facilitates obtaining a blood specimen from the source resident if ordered
- Call the main Lurie Pathology Laboratory Specimen Processing to notify that a rapid HIV is being sent
SECONDARY RESPONSE
& FOLLOW UP
- One hour after source patient blood is sent to the main Lurie Laboratory, report to Corporate Health or call (312) 926-8282
- One hour after source patient blood is sent to the main Lurie Laboratory, report to Corporate Health or call (312) 926-8282
- The operator will forward your call to the provider on call after normal business hours.
- Corporate Health or the provider on call will obtain source patient blood results and evaluate exposure
- Corporate Health or the provider will give you instructions on care and follow-up required
- On the day of the exposure complete Blood and Body Fluid Exposure Report fax to (312) 926-1787
- On the day of the exposure, complete Safety Event Report
- Follow-up with your manager
