INITIAL RESPONSE

When an individual is assaulted verbally or physically by an unarmed assailant:

  • Press the EMERG soft key or call security 77777
  • Press the EMERG soft key or call security (312) 227-7777
  • Provide as much information as can be safely provided - location, number/ description of assailant
  • Remain calm
  • Keep distance from assailant
  • Protect/defend yourself from personal injury
  • Warn others and move to an area of refuge as needed

 

SECONDARY RESPONSE

& FOLLOW UP

Shelter in place if in immediate danger:

  • Alert others
  • Move patients, families, visitors, and staff into safe haven locations (patient room, supply room, soiled utility room)
  • Shut and lock the door
  • Block the door with a heavy object

Once in safe haven location:

  • Silence cell phones and pagers
  • Turn off lights, close privacy curtains
  • Spread out, crawl under desk or other furniture
